Falling More in Love with Kampot

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of returning to Kampot. Kampot is by far one of my favorite places in Cambodia, probably one of my favorite places in the whole world. It is a sleepy town situated on a river. It is quiet and friendly. The town itself is still very active – there is a fish market and a riverfront “district.” Kampot has some amazing guesthouses. Before this trip I had always stayed at Bodhi Villa. This time, however, Bodhi Villa was full so we stayed at a guesthouse two doors down, Naga House. It was just as wonderful as Bodhi Villa has been in the past. A very chill atmosphere, good music, good food and right on the river.

We rode to Kampot in a van with 11 other people, a mix of friends and strangers. Everyone ended up being cool. It took us 5 hours to get to Kampot when it normally takes 2 and a half. We sat in front of the airport on our way out of Phnom Penh for about an hour. When we arrived it was straight to Bodhi Villa for the music and some drinkkks. As usual, the band was good, although we didn’t get to hear much of it due to our late arrival, and the crowd was interesting.

On Saturday I slept in. Nowadays, sleeping in means about 8:30 or 9:00, if I’m lucky. A group of about ten of us rented motos and drove up Bokor Mountain. It was an awesome drive. It took about 2 hours to make it to the top but that includes stopping multiple times for little diversions. We visited the new casino, the abandoned church, a small waterfall and a big waterfall, and a great view throughout the whole day!

Saturday night we hung out at Naga House, as they were the ones having the music. It was also the bartender’s birthday. She was awesome. All the girls got their faces painted like men and there was beer pong. Sister and I played a game and I must report an embarassing performance. I am not even sure we made one cup and it had to have been one of the shortest games of beer pong ever. It was still a fun night, loss and all.

Sunday we just hung out at the guesthouse, eating and drinking and socializing with the other people there. As always, Kampot delivered a relaxing and memorable weekend. I believe we have plans to return twice in December if that tells you anything. ❤
